Hi.. I'm editing a documentary which has been shot in 16x9. When I export it to tape it works fine on my 16x9 TV, but is obviously squished on a regular TV.
How do I export it in a way so it has the black bars, and then just expands on a 16x9 TV?
pS: Adobe Premiere, and I want to preserve the aspect ratio - not cut away image

Select the shots you want to letterbox on the timeline, go to "clip" at the top and down to "video options."
Click on "Maintain aspect ratio" and Robert's your mother's brother.
It'll probably take a while to render, and there may be interlacing issues, in which case go to "filed options" and fanny about with the settings.

So if you do this it will still play at full size on a 16:9 television?
and can it be exported to DV AVI and still work?

How about in Avid? I want to export it to minidv, but I suspect I'll have to shrink it. I had a look but I didn't see any options for it. I think there might be a plugin to squash the picture, but there must be a better way?
If you're putting the widescreen video onto DVD, the DVD player'll automatically letterbox if needs be...
... but if you follow the instructions I posted, the black bars will be part of the 4:3 image, and thus to play in the full ratio on a 16:9 TV you'd have to employ some sort of zooming scenario.

One thing I have noticed is that when I put a 16:9 file onto DVD, there's this funny dotted white line below the top left of the black bars... what the fuck is it? Can I get rid of it without matting 2 lines of black onto the picture?
A DVD .VOB file has an embedded flag which determines how the picture is displayed. IIRC this data is in the .IFO and .BUP files cos you need to hexedit iDVD projects in order to get anamorphic footage to display properly on 4:3 TVs.
miniDV has no such flag that I'm aware of (one that actually works across all devices and scenarios), so it'll be anamorphicly squished at a 4:3 ratio.
Although this article is about iDVD the hack it describes will work on any .IFO/.BUP file and allow your DVD to display properly no matter how the authoring program borks it up to begin with. The article assumes NTSC, this give the value for PAL.

Also when I export the movie in Quicktime its sqeezes everything into 4:3 :-/
A few questions:
a) When this thing is done I would like to burn it to a DVD. Unfortunately when I export it to an DV Avi file it ends up being 7.6 Gigs (its around 40 min of footage). Is there a trick, or is it just tough luck unless I can burn dual layer?
b) I tried import my giant AVI file into Squeeze 4, but when I do that I loose the apect ratio right there in the import. Clues?
premiere pro has an export to DVD option which would be worth trying. I've never used it before but it's supposed to be very good. It provides different levels of compression to choose from.
Whatever software you use to burn it to DVD should have some sort of video compression that will easily handle 40mins worth of footage
